This award-winning children's book is a collection of fifteen charming tales beloved by Vietnamese children for generations. Children and adults alike will be enchanted by the legends of bravery and beauty, fables about nature, and stories in which integrity, hard work and a kind heart triumph over deception, laziness and greed. "Vietnamese Children's Favorite Stories is a rainbow sampling of a rich culture's traditions for children, appealing to children of imagination everywhere," according to the Midwest Book Review.
The stories in this book celebrate Vietnam's rich cultural heritage, forging bonds with people around the world and bringing us all together in ways that only great stories can do. "Phuoc Tran's stories remind us of the depth and beauty of Vietnamese culture. The folktales help heal us all from the tragic history of the Vietnam War and bring the deep enduring cultural traditions back into the light to be shared by all," says David Zander, Cultural Anthropologist and Co-Founder of Asian Storytellers Alliance.
Among the fifteen charming stories included in this collection are tales of brave warriors, enchanted forests, and the legendary Mr. Cuoi under the Banyan tree. In "The Story of Thach Sanh and Ly Thong," readers will learn a lesson in honesty, bravery and the rewards of being truthful, as a young man is tricked time and time again by his sneaky acquaintance.
"Da Trang and the Magic Pearl" tells the story of a hunter who earns a magic pearl that grants him the ability to understand the language of the animal kingdom. Ants warn him of floods, birds help him hunt his prey, and sea creatures warn him of nearby sharks. But how far will he go to keep his power?
The folktale behind the colorful festival called Tet Trung Thu or Mid-Autumn festival is shared in "Mr. Cuoi Under the Banyan Tree." This story tells of "old Mr Cuoi dreaming of coming home" under the ivory moon and the Banyan tree.
These traditional Vietnamese stories have been passed down for generations, preserving the rich cultural heritage of the country. Through these enchanting tales, readers from around the world can connect with the depth and beauty of Vietnamese culture, and find themselves captivated by the timeless themes of bravery, integrity, and the triumph of the human spirit.
